“What a puerile thing to do!” Todd saw her clench her fists.

“Yeah?” he asked, clenching his, “whereas thrusting your arse in the air when I’m about to play a shot is the height of sophistication, I suppose!”

They approached each other, fists raised, and Todd wondered if he should intervene. Jessica was a colleague, after all. On the other hand, he was only a visitor and they might both tell him to mind his own business. So he did nothing.

They circled, glaring at each other, then Angus jabbed with his left and Jessica deflected it with her elbow. Frustrated, he threw a right cross, which she evaded by sliding to her side. Continuing her slide enabled her both to escape a left cross and to get in a sly, stinging punch at his kidney. Todd noticed Angus wince as her fist struck home.

The fight grew more intense after that first contact. Angus hurled a right cross that passed over Jessica’s left shoulder as she seemed to flick her body to the side. A similar attempt with his left swept to the side of her left shoulder. Following through, he badly over-stretched, so she punished his mistake by cracking him on the left ear with her right fist.
