Todd stood up, glowering, furious at having been humbugged (or “gaslit”, as everyone seems to say these days) by her about learning to box. Todd pressed the button and Hyu, wishing she could put several volts through it, marched to join Mai in the centre. They circled, and Mai got in this time with a left jab, catching Hyu both by surprise and on the chin. But she reacted quickly, getting the raven-haired girl on the jaw with a firm left cross. However, obviously refreshed from the break, Mai struck back with a solid, rising right cross to the chin.

This round was much more of a to-and-fro than the last one, going punch for punch. Hyu made the first mistake, with an attempted right cross which Mai first evaded, then punished severely with a left hook to the kidney. That was a telling blow, and Hyu’s head went back with her mouth open in unwilling acknowledgement of its power. Still, she was quite happy with how it had gone and was gratified to see Hyu trying hard to recover in her corner. When the idiot or buffoon (take your pick) rang the bell again, she confidently strode to the centre to face Hyu. It was almost a token circle this time, because Mai, eager to gain the victory which she sensed to be hers, got in with a glancing left to Hyu’s jaw.

By the look in her eyes, it seemed to disorientate her, so Mai pressed home the attack with a right cross to the eye, blackening it. This shocked Todd, watching through the window. He had received countless black eyes at the hands (literally) of women; to him, it just didn’t seem right that a woman should get one.

Mai intensified the attack with a left hook to the jaw, sending Hyu a few paces just to stay on her feet. Mai pursued her and Hyu clinched, playing for time. Then, perhaps Mai had become over-confident. Freeing herself from the clinch, she launched a huge right cross – and missed. Against the odds, Hyu had avoided it, edging herself to one side. Hyu raised her arms in celebration (and relief). Seeing Mai unconscious, she started the countdown.
